Surat: Gujarat Law Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the Assembly elections Hemant Chapatwala died on December 9 following illness.

The 59-year-old Chapatwala, a candidate from Surat City West, was suffering from kidney problem but had undertaken a hectic campaign, his family sources said. Following his death the election in the constituency is likely to be countermanded.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
