Dubai: Anees Ibrahim, younger brother of Mumbai underworld don Dawood Ibrahim,
wanted in several criminal cases in India, has been arrested here, according to
official sources here on December 09.
Anees was held on December 3 on the basis of a "red corner alert" issued by the
Interpol after he flew in from Pakistan on November 29, the sources said.
A Central Bureau of Investigation team arrived on December 8 to expedite the
proceedings to take Anees to India under a UAE-India extradition treaty signed in
1999, the sources added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani has expressed hope that CBI and the
Indian Embassy in Dubai would be able to bring him to India.
Advani, who is campaigning in Ahmedabad for the Gujarat polls, lauded the help of
Dubai authorities in detaining Aftab Ansari, main accused in the Kolkata shoot-out
case and his subsequent deportation.
Talking to reporters, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed hope that Anees
would also be brought to India and face trial.
He, however, did not give further details and said a statement was likely to be made
in Parliament on the issue.
UAE and India have been co-operating in exchanging criminals wanted in either
countries after the extradition treaty was concluded on October 25, 1999 after
protracted negotiations.
Indian officials at the Commission here said the CBI team would submit the
necessary papers making out the case against Anees to the local police for
expediting extradition proceedings.
Anees is the biggest catch for Indian investigators in Dubai after another
notorious Indian gangster Muthappa Rai was handed over to India by Dubai police
in May this year under the extradition treaty.
