Sonia keeps birthday celebrations a low key affair
Monday, December 9 2002 14:53 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Congress president and leader of Opposition Sonia Gandhi turned 56 on December 9 but the celebrations were low key.

Senior party leaders, Members of Parliament and a large number of partymen greeted Gandhi on her birthday. They visited her residence early in the morning and wished her a happy and healthy life.

A dance troop from Karnataka and several music bands from Delhi performed on the occasion in front of her residence at 10 Janpath, making it festive occasion.

Film Star Govinda also visited Gandhi and greeted her a successful life.

Gandhi had on Saturday asked party workers and leaders not to celebrate her birthday in an "ostentatious manner".

Recalling people's suffering on account of the worst-ever drought in different parts of the country, Gandhi had appealed to workers and leaders to contribute their mite in whatever manner they could for extending relief to the affected people.
