UN members sulk as US gets full Iraq declaration
Tuesday, December 10 2002 14:59 Hrs (IST)

United Nations: Resentment is brewing within the United Nations (UN) Security Council after its president handed over the first copy of uncensored version of the Iraqi declaration to the United States, ignoring other members.

The remaining permanent members and all non-permanent members have expressed anger at president and ambassador of Colombia Alfonso Valdivieso's decision denying them access to the copy simultaneously with the United States, diplomatic sources said.

A Colombian diplomat acknowledged that his government had made a 'political decision' to give the uncensored copy to Washington and wave aside objections from some of the non-permanent council members, most notably Syria.

The decision to entrust United States with the job of making copies of the dossier and distributing it to the other four permanent members - Britain, Russia, France and China - have also come in for sharp criticism.

The report had arrived at the UN headquarters only on December 8 night and by December 9 morning, one copy was in the hands of US experts in Washington, they said adding it was later during the day that the report was given to other permanent members.

Earlier, the 15 members of the Council had unanimously decided to let inspectors examine the report and edit out any parts, which give recipe or method to produce weapons of mass destruction. It was then agreed that all council members should get the same material.
