New Delhi: Notwithstanding strain in relations between India and Pakistan, National
Human Rights Commission Chairman (NHRC) J S Verma has favoured exchanges between the
judiciaries saying it will be 'mutually beneficial'.
"Our (India and Pakistan's) legal systems are similar. We refer to their judgement
and they strongly rely on our judgement," Verma, a former Chief Justice of India,
said.
Avoiding direct reference to the current stalemate in Indo-Pak relations, he
said, "Judicial exchanges are a totally different issue, if we can have it actively
with America, Britain, Australia and Canada and many other countries, why not
between India and Pakistan?"
"It is actually an exchange of views in the field of law and will be mutually
beneficial," Verma said at a discussion on books 'Towards Global Togetherness'
and 'My Diplomatic Sojourn' written by eminent jurist and former Ambassador to
United Kingdom L M Singhvi.
Lamenting that today's world leaders were not realising the virtues of diplomacy,
former Union Minister Karan Singh said the world could be kept together and a
majority of problems solved by effective use of this option.
"Diplomacy is on a downtrend in today's world and no wonder everywhere there is
tumult and turmoil," he said.
