Manipur militants engage troops in heavy firing

Imphal: Indian reserve battalion jawans exchanged heavy fire with insurgents at Langmeidong area in Thoubal district of Manipur on December 10, while police and security posts were put on maximum alert in five hill districts following December 8 ambush of three police personnel by militants in Ukhrul district.

Official sources said no casualty was reported during the encounter between insurgents and the security forces lasting for some hours at Langmeidong.

A member of banned People's Liberation Army (PLA), armed wing of separatist Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), was apprehended by security personnel at Langmeidong while other insurgents managed to escape afterwards, the sources said.

Meanwhile, police and security forces deployed at far-flung areas in five hills districts of Ukhrul, Chandel, Tamenglong, Senapati and Chandel were asked to step up patrol and checking of passers-by in their respective areas following the December 8 incident in Ukhrul in which three police personnel, including a sub inspector, were killed and three others injured, the sources said.

Identity of the militants, who had ambushed the police party led by superintendent of police (Ukhrul) Manglemjao Singh on December 8 at New Heaven area, was yet to be ascertained, the sources said.
