Pak will rejoice if Cong wins Gujarat polls: Modi
Tuesday, December 10 2002 14:54 Hrs (IST)

Modi launches broadside against Congress a day before elections Gozaria (Gujarat): Caretaker Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi on December 10 intensified his attack on the Congress on the last day of campaigning for the December 12 Assembly poll, alleging that Pakistan would "celebrate" if Congress comes to power after the election.

"It is up to the five crore people of Gujarat to decide who will burst crackers on December 15 (when the result is expected). If Congress comes to power in this election then Pakistan will celebrate and burst crackers but if Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerges victorious then entire India will burst crackers," he said.

He also accused Congress leaders of visiting mosques and 'dargahs' during Id to garner minority votes and thereby "misusing the real meaning of the festival, which preaches brotherhood among all communities and spreads a message of peace".

Accusing the All India Muslim Ulema Council of declaring a "fatwa' and urging Muslims to take revenge for what happened in Godhra by ensuring 100 per cent turnout and vote for Congress, Modi said such fatwas went against the spirit of Democracy.

Declaring that he has taken this election as a "challenge" for the first time, Modi said it was a challenge for him to "beat political parties that connive with anti- national elements to win elections and spread terror in the state".
