Foreign Ministers to meet in Cape Town ahead of NAM
Tuesday, December 10 2002 19:55 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Ahead of the next NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) Summit in Kuala Lumpur in February, Foreign Ministers from six countries including India who have been past chairmen will meet in Cape Town in South Africa from December 12 to 14 to discuss issues related to the revitalisation of the grouping.

External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, who leaves for Cape Town tonight (Dec 10), will join his counterparts from Algeria, Egypt, Cuba, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and current Chairman South Africa for the "brainstorming" session.

The theme of the next Summit is 'Revitalisation of the Non-Aligned Movement'. The relevance of NAM in a changed world, its priority issues and how it can plan a role in the world order are among the issues that are expected to come up for a substantial debate at Kuala Lumpur, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman told reporters.

India has stressed the need for unity within the movement to collectively address the global challenges such as terrorism, nuclear disarmament, poverty and illiteracy.
