Kozhikode: Additional police force had been deployed in Nilambur forest areas in
neighbouring Malappuram District in North Kerala bordering Gudallur in Tamil Nadu as
a precautionary measure to prevent forest brigand Veerappan from crossing over to
Kerala.
"Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the Nilambur forests bordering
Gudallur to check Veerappan from slipping into the state's borders," A Balakrishna
Nair, Malappuram district superintendent of police told reporters.
Police and forest officials were holding discussions on the situation in the border
areas and over the possibility of the brigand crossing the borders, he said, adding
additional police force had been deployed in the entire forest stretch in keeping
with the intensified search launched by the Tamil Nadu police to nab the
brigand.
"We are in constant touch with the Tamil Nadu police," he said when asked if either
the Tamil Nadu or Karnataka police had approached for joint operations in the border
areas particularly in the backdrop of recovery of former Karnataka Minister, H
Nagappa's body from Chengadi forests in Chamarajanagar district.
Karnataka's Bandipur forests, adjacent to Mysore, run up to Wyanad District in North
Kerala.
