New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on December 11 accused the Congress of
resorting to "fatwa politics" saying it would prove "counter-productive" to it.
"By resorting to the politics of fatwa (Muslim religious edicts), Congress has
caused a polarisation in Gujarat. It would prove counter-productive for the party as
it has alienated the majority community," BJP national treasurer and
in-charge (Prabhari) for Gujarat Ramdas Aggarwal said.
On the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) advertisements in local Gujarati papers
projecting the fatwa issued by a Muslim organisation in support of the Congress, and
appealing to the majority to vote for their "safety", Aggarwal said, "It is a
natural reaction."
Aggarwal also wondered as to why the Election Commission, "which was very quick in
stopping VHP's 'padpadshahi yatra', did not react to the 'fatwas' which were
communal, unethical and violative of the model poll code".
He also claimed the ruling party would sail through with a comfortable margin in the
December 12 elections.
