Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has cancelled his Bangladesh visit on the
advice of the Centre, which asked him to desist from trip in the wake of the
controversy surrounding presence of anti-India terrorists in
Bangladesh.
The Centre had cleared his trip but later advised him to cancel it following the
controversy, Zoramthanga told reporters on December 11.
The Chief Minister and state chief secretary H V Lalringa, were scheduled to go to
Dhaka on December 11 to discuss sale of Mizoram ginger produce to that country.
He was also planning to talk about bringing back the mortal remains of about 30
underground Mizo National Front activists who were killed during exile on erstwhile
East Pakistan soil in 1970s.
External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha had said in the Lok Sabha on November 27
that Pakistani High Commission in Dhaka had become the 'nerve centre' of Inter
Service Intelligence (ISI) activities in promoting terrorism and insurgency in India
and some al- Qaeda elements have taken shelter in Bangladesh.
Dhaka rejected the charges and asked New Delhi to provide evidence saying it would
investigate the allegations.
Border Security Force (BSF) director general Ajai Raj Sharma, however, insisted that
al- Qaida presence in Bangladesh had been reported and ISI
activities there were on the rise.
Earlier on November 7, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani voiced concern over growing
activities of ISI and al-Qaeda in Bangladesh.
