Thursday, December 12 2002 15:49 Hrs (IST)

Guwahati: An Army nayak was killed and eight others were injured in an ambush by suspected Dima Halong Daogah (DHD) militants in Central Assam's North Cachar (NC) Hills district on December 12.

Police told that the extremists attacked an Army patrol in the Umrangshu area and opened fire on them from the nearby hilly jungles.

The troops also retaliated and one of them was killed in the exchange of fire while eight others received bullet injuries.

The wounded had been admitted to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and Umrangshu civil hospitals.

The area was cordoned off and a massive combing operation launched in the hill and jungle areas to track out the assailants.
