EC dismisses complaints of deletion of voters' names
Thursday, December 12 2002 22:56 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The Election Commission on December 12 virtually brushed aside complaints of large-scale deletion of names of voters including that of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia from electoral list in Gujarat, which recorded approximate 63 per cent polling in the Assembly elections.

Despite elaborate arrangements made to update the electoral list and adequate opportunities given to political parties, if some persons' names were not in the voters list, "at the best we can say it was unfortunate", Deputy Election Commissioner A N Jha told reporters on the completion of the polls which he described as "by and large peaceful".

"I do not want to react," was the cryptic response of Jha when asked specifically about Togadia's allegation that Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh hatched a "conspiracy against Hindu society by deliberately omitting names of a large number of Hindus".
