New Delhi: To remember over 25,000 policemen across the country, who made supreme
sacrifices in the cause of the nation, a National Police Memorial is coming up in
the heart of the capital.
The memorial, whose foundation stone would be laid by Deputy Prime Minister L K
Advani at Delhi's diplomatic enclave of Chanakyapuri on December 13, is likely to be
constructed in the next 18 months.
December 13 would be the first anniversary of the attack on Parliament by Pakistan-
backed terrorists in which nine security personnel and Parliament staffers were
killed apart from the five attackers.
Police forces all over the country observe the Police Commemoration Day on October
21 each year to remember the policemen, who laid down their lives at the Hot Springs
in Ladakh in a combat with Chinese troops in the 1962 war.
There are three police memorials at present in the country - the Hot Springs
(Ladakh), Neemuch (Madhya Pradesh) and Kalimpong (West Bengal).
The National Police Memorial, to come up on 7.54 acres of land at the North end of
Chanakyapuri, would become a tourist attraction when it comes up, besides being "a
testimonial to the invaluable role being played by the police forces in ensuring a
peaceful and safe society", a Home Ministry spokesman said.
