New Delhi: Congress on December 13 sought to dismiss the exit poll on Gujarat
Assembly elections and claimed it would form government in the state getting a
comfortable majority.
"There are contradictions even among various exit polls. In the past, exit polls
about West Bengal, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections
were proved wrong. Our own experiences and information speaks that party would get a
comfortable majority in Gujarat," party spokesman Satyabrata Chaturvedi told
reporters.
Chaturvedi said that Gujarat elections were held in an "extraordinary" situation as
the state went to polls after witnessing large-scale communal violence.
"People of the state are yet to come out of the trauma to speak the truth to the
media regarding whom they have voted for in the polls."
"That is why we are not going to believe the projection of the exit polls," he
said.
Asked about Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s allegation that Congress was dividing
people on communal lines, he said, "Now they are talking about communal division.
What were BJP, VHP, RSS and Bajrang Dal doing when they shouted against Musharraf,
Pakistan and Godhra carnage? They tried to polarise the society but failed. Now they
are complaining about it."
Regarding BJP's objection to diplomats visiting and observing Gujarat polls, he said
the party should have stopped them as it was in power both at the Centre and in the
state.
