Nagpur: Alarmed by the threat from al-Qaida militants to blow up the Vidhan Bhavan
(Legislative Assembly) in the second capital of Maharashtra, here police have thrown
an unprecedented security blanket around its premises.
"Al-Qaida has threatened to blow up the Vidhan Bhavan and sent an e-mail to a
foreign Embassy in Mumbai, which passed on the sensitive information to state
police," top police officials said.
The winter session of the state Legislature commenced here from December 11.
Vehicular traffic leading to Vidhan Bhavan in the Civil Lines area has been
regulated and each and every vehicle was strictly checked.
All the visitors including reporters covering the Legislature were allowed only
after dual verification of the entry passes as well as their office
identification.
Top police officials had a series of meetings during the last two days to discuss
the security scenario.
Similarly security arrangements at ministers' cottages in Ravi Bhavan, Chief
Minister's residence "Ramgiri", Deputy Chief Minister's residence "Deogiri" and
other important official premises have been stepped up, police added.
