Nagpur: Alarmed by the threat from al-Qaida militants to blow up the Vidhan Bhavan (Legislative Assembly) in the second capital of Maharashtra, here police have thrown an unprecedented security blanket around its premises.

"Al-Qaida has threatened to blow up the Vidhan Bhavan and sent an e-mail to a foreign Embassy in Mumbai, which passed on the sensitive information to state police," top police officials said.

The winter session of the state Legislature commenced here from December 11.

Vehicular traffic leading to Vidhan Bhavan in the Civil Lines area has been regulated and each and every vehicle was strictly checked.

All the visitors including reporters covering the Legislature were allowed only after dual verification of the entry passes as well as their office identification.

Top police officials had a series of meetings during the last two days to discuss the security scenario.

Similarly security arrangements at ministers' cottages in Ravi Bhavan, Chief Minister's residence "Ramgiri", Deputy Chief Minister's residence "Deogiri" and other important official premises have been stepped up, police added.
