Kolkata: Lt-General J S Varma, GoC-in-C, Eastern Command, on December 16 said that
the Army had information about existence of militant camps in Bangladesh, alleging
that the government in that country was not taking adequate measures to curb the
ultra activities.
Asked about the al-Qaida terrorists having camps in Bangladesh, Lt Gen Varma told
reporters at a function to mark the 'Victory Day' in Kolkata that some militant
organisations were running camps in Bangladesh.
Asked about infiltration from across Bangladesh, he said that the BSF (Border
Security Force) was entrusted with the onerous task of guarding the border, though
there were reports about some anti-social elements creating problems in the border
areas.
Lt Gen Varma described the 'Victory day' as a day of immense significance for India,
which culminated in the surrender of Pakistani troops to the Indian forces and
emergence of Bangladesh as a sovereign country in 1971.
