Votes not polarised on communal lines: Clerics
Monday, December 16 2002 16:18 Hrs (IST)

Gujarat election results
Lucknow: In a cautious reaction to the poll outcome in Gujarat, prominent Muslim clerics and leaders on December 16 urged the members of the minority community to respect the people's verdict and help the new government to build the state.

Vice-President of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Dr Kalbe Sadiq said that results were clear indication that polarisation of votes had taken place on communal lines, but claimed the divide was "not so sharp as expected".

Time has now come for all Opposition parties including the Congress to help the new government build Gujarat, he said.

Shia cleric Agha Roohi blamed muslim leaders for misleading members of minority community on communal lines. Community should chalk out its course afresh to suit the changed scenario, he said.

Jaffaryab Zilani, convener of the All India Babri Masjid Action Committee (AIBMAC) claimed despite the efforts of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, division in the society was not sharp.

Had it been so, the Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) should have polled over 70 per cent votes, he claimed.
