BJP seeks withdrawal of MFN status to Pakistan
Wednesday, December 18 2002 18:22 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on December 18 sought withdrawal of most favoured nation (MFN) status to Pakistan, as that country was not extending the same benefit to India.

"Though under the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) agreement Pakistan is being given MFN, we want this to be withdrawn as that country is not reciprocating this," party spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters.

He said even the US policy towards Pakistan was not helping to check terrorism and that American Ambassador Robert Blackwill's remarks condemning terrorist attack on Parliament appeared to be only lip service.

"The US policy towards Pakistan is not enough to make Islamabad stop aiding and abetting terrorist activities in this country. Pakistan has now become a state backing terrorism and this is more so since the release of Masood Azhar who heads terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)," he said.

Malhotra said the government should also take a tough stand against Bangladesh where a large number of terrorist camps have sprung up and minorities are being attacked.

He said the government was making all efforts to get underworld don Anees Ibrahim extradited from United Arab Emirates (UAE).
