'BJP doesn't need Pak's certificate on secularism'
Wednesday, December 18 2002 10:56 Hrs (IST)

Gujarat election results
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on December 17 said it does not require a certificate from Pakistan on its nationalist, Democratic and secular credentials.

Reacting sharply to observations appearing in the Pakistani media about Gujarat Assembly elections, party general secretary and spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said in a statement, "The mischievous observations on the biggest and largest Democracy of the world will prove fatal to Pakistan."

"Pakistan should understand that franchise exercised by 90 per cent of minorities in Gujarat does not reflect their fear and terror but a fearless impartial environment," he said, adding Islamabad should not try to become a custodian of Indian Muslims.

He said the new government in Gujarat would take effective steps to ensure security, economic and social progress of all sections of society including minorities.

He also advised Indian Muslims not to look at BJP states "through the evil eyes of Pakistani propaganda and rumours spread by anti-BJP forces".
