Curfew lifted from sensitive Gujarat districts
Wednesday, December 18 2002 13:29 Hrs (IST)

Gujarat election results
Ahmedabad: Curfew was lifted on December 18 from sensitive areas of Vadodara and Rajkot districts of Gujarat, which witnessed arson and murder after the announcement of Gujarat Assembly polls on December 15, state police control said.

Curfew was clamped in certain sensitive areas of the two districts on December 15 after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s victory procession was stoned by rival groups, in which one person was killed and six others were injured.

In Vadodara city, the communally sensitive Raopura and Panigate areas were put under curfew as a "precautionary measure" after group clashes which forced police to fire in the air to disperse the rioting mobs.

In Rajkot city, Jambleshwar area was tense two days ago after a BJP worker was done to death by a group of alleged Congress supporters after the victory procession passed through a sensitive locality.

Police has arrested over 100 persons in connection with the violence and three in connection with murder in Vadodara.
