India detains Bangladeshi fishermen for trespassing
Wednesday, December 18 2002 12:27 Hrs (IST)

Diamond Harbour (West Bengal): Around 100 Bangladeshi fishermen in twelve trawlers have been detained while trespassing in Indian waters off the West Bengal coast in the Sunderbans, according to official sources.

The Bangladeshis were fishing near Kedo in South 24 Parganas district on December 17 when the local fishermen caught hold of them and took them to Pathar Pratima police station.

Police reached the spot and seized the trawlers for poaching. The fishermen were being interrogated.

Official sources said the Bangladeshi fishermen may have strayed into Indian waters while fishing in the Bay of Bengal.
