Reform judiciary to prevent recurrence of riots
By Ramesh K Agnost
Thursday, December 19 2002 12:38 Hrs (IST)

Liberals like us have always resorted to blatant generalisations. Let us not lie we have an agenda that is noble. But the methods used by liberals are questionable and this is driving away people from our camps.

People of Gujarat have spoken their mind. I think its time for liberals like us to shut up and re-analyse if we were right all along.

The riot in Gujarat was a reaction to the Godhra train massacre, whether we like it or not. It is the responsibility of the government to establish law and order. Had Gujarat government been involved in the so-called pogrom (organised massacre), then Hindus would not have died in the riot. I attribute it to failed governance rather than a pogrom at the behest of Modi's government.

In the riot people belonging to both communities died. It was the time when insanity was prevalent in both communities. Let us be realistic, even with one of the best police force and unlimited resources available, the Los Angeles city had a tough time quelling riots. Without proof, let us give the benefit of doubt to Modi. I don't like it but life is tough.

Other than rambling in the media there was no shred of evidence to prove the involvement of government of Gujarat in the riots. We liberals love to use every chance we get to bash.

Though I am no fan of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), I believe that media played an unwitting role in consolidation of Hindu vote which for years the BJP had failed to do.

Almost every opinion in leading newspapers shed crocodile tears for the loss of Muslim life. They forgot that hundreds of Hindus have died in the riots and they deserved the same. The liberal media showed no compassion for Hindus. I do not understand the rationale of the media when it comes to the loss of Hindu life. Don't Hindus have right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness?

Instead of condemning the insanity prevalent during the riots, the media focused much of its energy in bashing Hindus. We liberals played into the hands of BJP. Media's non-stop attention to the plight of Muslims invigorated the BJP. It gave a fresh lease of life to the BJP. The media should have focused on the loss of life without attributing religion to it.

When Hindus died in Godhra event, the liberal media bashed Hindus and called them fundamentalist Hindus. The liberal media committed a blunder by doing so. Didn't they notice that even children died in the dastardly act? Instead of attributing the act to Islamic terrorists, they attributed it to fundamentalist Hindus.

Even the editorials were soft on Islamic terrorism. They love to use the term "Hindu fundamentalism or terrorism' and hate to use "Islamic terrorism". They love to refer the terrorists in Kashmir as militants or separatists rather than terrorists.

Riots are nothing new in India. It happens because India is becoming a lawless society. Indians do not have any belief in the judicial system because it is lousy. The people settle their differences on the streets. During riots the little sanity that people have is lost.

The only way to limit future loss of life is to see that the perpetrators are punished. Judicial reform by making speedy justice a fundamental right and tougher sentences can prevent future riots. We focused much on an idealistic society and achieved nothing. Now let us focus on a realistic society. We have to create a system that is tough on crime.

Attributing Pravin Togadia's statements to every Hindu is wrong. He belongs to ultra right that has no say so in the direction of the country. Every country has such people and USA is no exception. What USA has and we don't have is rule of law and speedy justice. Modi or no Modi, events like Godhra will repeat without strong judicial system.

India always loses as long as the judicial system is not reformed.
