Bangalore: The Centre has proposed to introduce an umbrella labour Legislation in
the budget session of Parliament, Union Labour Minister Sahib Singh Verma said on
December 21.
Speaking to reporters after attending a function here, he said there was support
from all major parties for the proposed Legislation, but he was "doubtful" about
support from leftist parties to it.
Verma said Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee would be the first recipient before
January one of the first "social security number" under a government scheme.
To a query, he said the state governments were extending support to the "business
process re-engineering" being undertaken for ensuring that the employees' provident
fund (EPF) claims were settled within three or four days without loss of interest.
Verma said the report of a committee set up to improve the level of service in
Employees State Insurance hospitals was expected to be submitted before December 31.
Earlier, addressing the valedictory function of the two-day southern regional
conference of the National Institute of Personnel Management, he said there was a
need for a change in the mindset of the employers who should make the employees feel
that they were part of the organisation.
