Gas leakage from IPCL plant affects 150 in Guj
Saturday, December 21 2002 14:40 Hrs (IST)

Vadodara: About 150 people in Jageshwar village in neighboring Bharuch district were affected due to chlorine gas leakage from local Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (IPCL) plant on December 20 night, according to Bharuch district collector Anju Sharma.

"However, the situation is under control and there is no cause of worry," Sharma told reporters.

People started coughing and had trouble in breathing even as the situation was brought under control in five minutes, she said.

While the affected persons, who were rushed to various hospitals, were discharged soon, only one woman was admitted to the hospital in Bharuch, she said.

After the leakage was noticed, the IPCL authorities shut down the plant to carry out detailed investigation to ascertain the cause for leakage.

Pollution control board officials and senior government officials have rushed to the spot, she said.

The sub-divisional magistrate would conduct an inquiry into the leakage, Sharma added.
