Dubai: Stressing the need for dialogue among civilisations, Pakistan Prime Minister
Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has said that only uncivilised nations avoid talks and go
for wars while agreeing that the United Nations (UN) should be in the lead to
resolve global problems to avoid military confrontations.
"Dialogue is emblem for civilisations and only civilised nations talk and discuss
issues to try and settle issues," he said in an interview to the official Iranian
news agency IRNA in Islamabad.
He was responding to a question about Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's proposal,
tabled before the UN General Assembly session in the year 1999, that there should be
a dialogue among civilisations to promote greater understanding.
"Either side has to convince the other and to accept. This is what civilisation
teaches the human beings," Jamali said.
To a question about the role of the UN in resolution of the issues, he said, "We
want the world body to deliver instead of talking."
He, however, agreed that the UN should be in the lead in the efforts to resolve
global problems to avoid military confrontations.
Replying to a question, Jamali said no country on earth supported terrorism or
appreciated the menace.
On how to combat terrorism, he said the best thing for a country is to formulate its
own strategy and counter this challenge.
About reports linking Iran and Pakistan with terrorism, Jamali said, "You can't just
stop people from talking and there is no bar on wishful thinking."
