Hyderabad: Fancied Maharashtra player Nitin Kirtane and teenage talent Sania Mirza
of Andhra Pradesh carved out contrasting victories to win the men's and women's
tennis singles titles at the 32nd National Games on Sunday.
Kirtane, the top seed, had to battle it out before getting the better of local
favourite Punna Vishal 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in the men's singles final while Mirza
coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over an indisposed state mate Manisha Malhotra before a
packed-to-capacity SAAP tennis complex.
Malhotra, roped in by the host state from Maharashtra for the Games, could barely
stand on her feet as she was down with high fever, gifting the in-form Mirza almost
a walkover on the centre court.
The match lasted only 32 minutes, with the final set turning out to be the shortest
one of the tournament as Malhotra's increasing ordeal got over in barely 12
minutes.
Kirtane, on the other hand, won the opening set in style but came up with a stiff
second set resistance from Vishal.
Egged on by the vociferous crowd, Vishal took the set to level the issue, before
giving his opponent a run for the money in the decider, which rolled into the
tiebreak.
The cool Maharashtra boy kept his composure to take the tiebreak 7-4 and clinch the
gold.
