New Delhi: Middle distance runner Sunita Rani will get back the Busan Asian Games
medals, that were taken away from her on charges of doping, following her clearance
by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Olympic Council of Asia (OCA )
secretary-general Randhir Singh announced on Tuesday.
Randhir Singh said OCA had received the report of IOC's medical commission which had
found certain discrepancies in the testing procedures at the dope laboratory in
Seoul.
Following the findings of the medical commission, IOC had advised OCA not to pursue
the matter any further. The report had been referred to a five-member task-force of
OCA which will study it before returning the medals to Sunita Rani in the next one
or two days, Randhir Singh said.
He said this was the first time in the history of Asian Games that medals wee being
returned to an athlete after being taken away on doping charges. Sunita Rani had won
the gold medal in women's 1500m race in a new Games record time and also a bronze in
the 5,000m.
She was stripped of her medals following a positive dope test for banned
substance 'nandrolone'. The athlete, who had cleared the dope tests here before
leaving for Busan, and the Indian officials questioned the testing procedures in the
South Korean laboratory, claiming they were not fool-proof.
An internal inquiry ordered by the Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI) had
concluded that on the evidence available, Sunita Rani could not be found guilty of
doping.
