Washington: Pakistan on January 5 said it would support the UN Security Council
resolution on Iraq if the United States favoured implementation of the world body's
resolution on Kashmir, a leading newspaper said on January 5.
Pakistan's Ambassador to the UN Munir Akram said Islamabad will support the US for
implementing UNSC resolutions on Iraq only if Washington supports its demand for
implementing UN resolutions on Kashmir, 'The New York Times' said in a
report.
He told the paper that Pakistan would be inclined to "see Iraq through the prism" of
its conflict with India.
"Our position always is based on the legal principle that the resolutions of the
Security Council must be respected," Akram added.
Pakistan is happy to see Bush demand that the UN enforce its past
resolutions.
However, he reminded the US that Pakistan has long said India has failed to comply
with UN resolutions on Kashmir.
Pakistan recently joined the 15-member Security Council as non-permanent member for
a two-year term ending Dec 31, 2004.
