Dhaka: A fresh spell of cold wave has left 43 people dead in a single day in
Bangladesh, taking the toll of deaths in the country due to cold weather to over 240.
As many as 43 deaths were reported in the eight Northern districts, including
Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Nilphamari, on January 7, where the temperature dipped to a
minimum of three degree Celsius, reports said on January 8.
The fall in mercury led to admission of over 150 children with cold-related
complications in hospitals in Dinajpur, the vernacular daily 'Janakantha' reported.
The cold spell accompanied with heavy fog has thrown life out of gear, with road and
riverine transport having been seriously affected.
Several flights have been rescheduled, the reports said.
Cold wave and fog are also being experienced in South Eastern Chittagong, Khulna and
Sylhet divisions, 'The Bangladesh Observer' reported.
Reports from affected areas said government agencies and several voluntary
organisations are distributing warm clothing and arranging shelter for the homeless.
Weather officials have said the cold wave is likely to intensify in the next couple
of days.
