Srinagar: Five militants including a self-styled district commander of Tehreek-ul-
Mujahideen (TuM) were killed in separate encounters with security forces in Kashmir
Valley since January 7 night, a police spokesman said.
The TuM commander, a Pakistani national identified as Abu Talha, was killed in an
eight-hour long gun battle with Army jawans at Gondipora village in Badgam district
of Central Kashmir in the early hours of January 8, the spokesman said.
He said a house was also damaged in the encounter, which ended around 1.00 am (IST).
An AK rifle, five magazines and a grenade were recovered from the possession of the
slain militant.
In a major encounter, troops of Rashtriya Rifles shot dead three unidentified
militants during search operations at Kreeri in Baramulla district of North Kashmir
on January 8, the spokesman said.
The operation was still continuing and further details were awaited, he said.
He said Army troops also killed a Pakistani militant of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM)
outfit in a gunfight at Walkul village in border district of Kupwara in North
Kashmir on January 7 night.
Meanwhile, unidentified persons threw acid on a youth at Tantray check in Anantnag
district of South Kashmir on January 7 night causing serious injuries to him, the
spokesman said.
The youth had been shifted to a hospital, he added.
