Thursday, January 9 2003 13:24 Hrs (IST)

Dhaka: The fresh spell of cold wave sweeping across Bangladesh has claimed more than a hundred lives in the last two days, including 61 overnight.

Extreme cold killed 61 people on January 8 and the adverse weather conditions are likely to continue for another two days, a media report said on January 9.

The Northernmost district of Dinajpur was the worst affected with 20 deaths occurring in this region alone, the 'Daily Ittefaq' reported.

Cold accompanied by heavy fog has confined most people to their homes and disrupted all channels of communication affecting schedule of airlines, trains and riverine transport.

The mercury was hovering around seven degrees Celsius in most places, the report said, adding hundreds of people were also suffering from diarrhoea and pneumonia with many being hospitalised.

Meanwhile, the official BSS news agency reported that Bangladesh was experiencing its worst winter in four years.
