Thiruvananthapuram: The eighth edition of National Youth Festival (NYF) began on a
colourful note in Thiruvananthapuram on January 12 evening with artistes from
various parts of the country presenting diverse forms of classical and folk art
before an impressive crowd.
Union Minister For Urban Development Anant Kumar, who was the chief guest at the
function, said the youth of the country who constituted 33 per cent of the
population, had the twin responsibilities of making India a secure nation and an
economic power. They should resolve to fight international terrorism, he said.
The government was for speedy and equitable development. The ruling parties and the
Opposition should work towards attaining unity and development disregarding
political loyalties, he said.
India had registered progress in the fields of Information Technology, nuclear power
and biotechnology over the years and the youth should now work for the economic
prosperity of the country, he added.
Union Minister Of State For Youth Affairs Pon Radhakrishnan who was also present,
said the youth must be viewed as an invariable asset and their abundant energy
should be channelised for productive activities. The youth should spread the message
of solidarity and fight against terrorism and evil, he added.
Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony presided over the function. The State Youth Affairs
Minister M A Kuttappan also spoke. The national youth awards for excellence in
various fields were also presented during the function.
Around 3,000 youths from various parts of the country would participate in various
competitions in classical and folk dance forms and music to be held in five venues
here in the next four days.
