Daily tenders apology, AMSU lifts circulation ban
Tuesday, January 14 2003 10:41 Hrs (IST)

Imphal: The indefinite ban on the circulation in Manipur of the Kolkata-based English daily 'The Telegraph' by the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) would be lifted on January 14, the union secretary general Athokpam Shyam said.

The ban was imposed on January 13 for publishing ''a wrong report in connection with June 2001 agitation against the Centre – National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Issac/Muivah (NSCN-IM) ceasefire extension to Manipur'' in its Guwahati edition on January 11 last.

Talking to reporters, Shyam claimed that the paper had in a letter tendered an apology for publishing the report and the letter would be discussed in AMSU's executive meeting, after which the ban would be lifted.

The daily is considered to have a wide circulation in Manipur among the newspapers coming from outside the state.
