New Delhi: The Rs 90 crore exclusive satellite for enhancing literacy level, EDUSAT,
programmed for launch as INSAT-3, will become operational by 2005.
EDUSAT will be put into geo-stationary orbit during the third experimental flight of
GSLV-3 with the indigenously built cryogenic engine, an official release said on
January 14.
It said preparations were underway for establishment of ground infrastructure and
software needed for distance education programme as well as for setting up of a
satellite-based Education Authority.
Meanwhile, the government has approved the development of advanced version of ISRO's
(Indian Space Research Organisation) geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle GSLV
MK-III having a capability to launch satellites weighing upto four tonnes.
The next generation INSAT-4 series of satellites are planned for launch by the
indigenous GSLV during its operational flights in the 10th Plan period, the release
added.
