Tight security for Ahmedabad 'Uttarayan' festival
Tuesday, January 14 2003 12:23 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: City police, with the help of para-military personnel, has thrown a heavy security blanket around the walled city to avert any disturbances on the day of 'Uttarayan' festival.

As many as 30 companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), two companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and equal number of Border Wing are deployed in the sensitive areas of the city, police said on January 14.

Also, "dhaba points" (terrace police points) have been erected in communally sensitive areas of Kalupur, Dariapur, Shahpur and others to monitor that no minor scuffle snowballs into communal disturbances, police said.

"Usually, a small tiff over kite flying takes unruly turn. Therefore, SRP jawans with wireless sets have been stationed on 'dhabas' (terraces) to see that such things are averted," an official said.

Police has also intensified "mobile" patrolling in all sensitive areas and is maintaining a tight vigil during the festival, sources said, adding police is also encouraging "mohalla" meetings in several sensitive areas and appealed people to refrain from spreading rumours.
