New Delhi: Asserting there was no let up in infiltration from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir, the Army Chief General N C Vij on January 15 ruled out any reduction of forces from the state.

Instead, the Army Chief said posture of the troops on the border would be reinforced all along the line of control (LoC) to give the new peace initiative in the state room to consolidate.

"There is no drop in the level of infiltration. It is at the level it was last winter. It may be low due to constraints of weather, but it is continuing, " Vij said.

The Army Chief said India had now put in place surveillance systems all along the Northern Command formations to make it harder for terrorists and mercenaries to cross the LoC.

Speaking to reporters after taking the salute at an impressive Army Day parade in New Delhi in which for the first time the Russian acquired T-90 tanks were on display, the Chief of the Army Staff said that during the recent almost year-long deployment code-named Operation Parakrama, the Army had found its newly acquired heavy equipment and force multipliers all battle-worthy.

On the T-9O tanks of which five armoured regiments have already been raised, the Army Chief said the Army's new main battle tank was versatile, with good mobility and firepower and would provide India a good battleground edge.
