Indians advance in mixed doubles at Australian Open

New Delhi: Indian tennis star Leander Paes has had a successful outing so far at the Australian Open, winning both his doubles and mixed doubles matches at Melbourne on Friday.

Paes advanced into the third round of the men's doubles with partner David Rikl of Czech Republic, defeating Moroccans Hicam Arazi and Younes el Aynaoui 7-6 (7-4), 6- 1, according to information received in New Delhi.

Bhupathi was not as lucky in the doubles competition, bowing out in the first round with partner Joshua Eagle of Australia.

In the mixed doubles, both Paes and former partner Mahesh Bhupathi cruised into the second round.

While Paes and former tennis great Martina Navratilova won against Australians Scott Draper and Lisa McShea 6-3, 7-5, Bhupathi and Uzbek partner Iyoda Tulyaganova overcame American Brian McPhie and Japanese Rika Fujiwara 6-2, 6-2.
