Srinagar: An Army officer, six militants and a girl were among nine persons killed
and six others, including four security personnel injured, in Jammu and Kashmir,
where security forces averted a major tragedy by defusing an improvised explosive
device (IED) planted by ultras on a road, since January 17 evening.
An Army Major, Uttal, a jawan and a militant were killed in a gunbattle in Srawan-
Keshwan in Doda district where the security personnel had launched an operation to
flush out ultras on January 17 night, official sources said.
Bodies of two militants were recovered from two residential houses at village Chak-i-
Seeri near Pattan in Baramulla district of North Kashmir, where militants engaged an
Army patrol in a gunfight on January 17 evening, an official spokesman
said.
A civilian, Ghulam Mohammad Khan, received minor injuries in the encounter which
also damaged the two residential houses used by militants as their hideouts, the
spokesman said.
He said a militant of pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen outfit was killed in an
encounter with security forces at Surinder-Bandipora in Baramulla district on
January 18. One AK assault rifle, a handgrenade and some ammunition were recovered
from the slain militant.
Police picked up body of a girl, Shakeela Akhter, near her native village of Check
Watoo near Dhamhal Hanjipora in Kulgam area of Anantnag district of South Kashmir on
January 18, the spokesman said.
