India accepts Russia's joint Naval exercise offer
Saturday, January 18 2003 12:34 Hrs (IST)

Moscow: India has accepted Russia's proposal to hold a joint Naval exercise in the Indian Ocean in the next three to four months, Defence Minister George Fernandes has said.

This proposal was made by the Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov during his meeting with Fernandes on January 17.

"We have accepted their proposal for joint Naval exercise in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea," Fernandes said adding it would be held after three to four months.

For the first time since the break up of the former United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), Moscow is sending its several warships to the Indian Ocean for war games.

According to the 'Kommersant' daily, two destroyers of Russia's Pacific Fleet, Flagship of Black Sea Fleet, missile cruiser 'Moskva' and a nuclear submarine of North Sea Fleet along with landing crafts and support ships are leaving on a six- month voyage to the Indian Ocean in February.
