Rae Bareilly: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on January 18 vowed to block implementation of Uttar Pradesh government's decision to name Amethi after Maharashtra dalit leader Shahuji Maharaj, saying there was no logic behind the decision.

"Amethi is a very special place not only in Uttar Pradesh or in the country but also abroad because it was Rajiv Gandhi's constituency," Gandhi who represents Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, told reporters.

"The people of Amethi had voted for Rajiv Gandhi, who went on to become the Prime Minister of the country, bringing Amethi on the international map," she said.

"Nobody is happy with the decision of the government to change the name of Amethi. Why should there be a change," she asked.
