New Delhi: Private cellular operators on January 20 said they would soon announce
reduction in tariffs upon the finalisation of the regulations on interconnection
regime by the telecom regulator TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India).
"We have made a presentation to the communication Minister Pramod Mahajan about the
issues of non-discriminatory and cost-based interconnect regime... Mahajan has
assured the industry to review these issues on urgent basis," Cellular Operators
Association of India (COAI) statement said in New Delhi.
The cellular industry has been demanding that access charges of Rs 1.20 paid by
cellular operators to fixed line operators (for making a call from cell phone to
fixed line phone) should either be withdrawn or the same should be levied on WLL
service operators too.
Pending the finalisation of regulations by TRAI, the cellular industry has agreed to
accept traffic (both incoming and outgoing) from WLL-mobile operators.
