Guwahati: Three bogies of the 5960 down Dibrugarh-Guwahati-Howrah Express jumped off
the tracks following a bomb blast in Central Assam's Karbi Anglong district in the
early hours on January 20, according to NF Railway sources.
However, there was no report of any injury so far as the bogies that derailed
included an almost empty general compartment, a parcel van and a brake van, they
said.
Tracks have been damaged on the single line broad gauge section due to the explosion
and the subsequent derailment and the Railway personnel were working on rescheduling
trains passing through the section until the tracks were repaired.
The derailment of the Howrah-bound train occurred under Diphu-Lumding section of NF
railway between Diphu and Nailalung stations just after it had left Diphu around
1.30 am (IST) for Guwahati.
Police said the bomb was planted by suspected militants on the tracks, which
exploded as the train passed over the rails.
Stating that the identity of the insurgent outfit responsible for the explosion was
not immediately ascertained, police said the militant United People's Democratic
Solidarity (UPDS) whose factions were opposed to the ongoing talks between the
Centre and the Nagas were active in the area.
Altogether 60 buses have been pressed into service for trans-shipment of the
passengers of the train as well as the Dibrugarh-Guwahati-Delhi Rajdhani and the
corresponding Howrah-Guwahati-Dibrugarh Kamrup Express which were scheduled to pass
the area on January 20 morning.
A relief van, a medical van with doctors and para medical staff and senior NF
railway officials had immediately rushed to the site as the guard informed the
railway authorities of Kamrup's derailment.
