Doha: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani on January 22 met the Emir of Qatar Sheikh
Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani and discussed topics relating to tackling terrorism and
regional security issues like the ongoing Iraqi crisis.
The meeting on the second day of Advani's visit to this Gulf state came in the
backdrop of India and Qatar coming out against any unilateral action on Iraq and
agreeing on the need for a bilateral framework for fighting terrorism.
Advani and Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jabor al-Thani had on January
21 opposed any unilateral action on Iraq in what is seen as a significant statement
in the context of gathering storm in the Gulf over Iraq.
Advani's talks with the Emir covered among other things the need to quickly follow
up on areas like having an extradition treaty, an agreement on mutual assistance in
crucial matters and to set up a joint working group on terrorism.
