JK govt's 'healing touch policy' an eyewash: Omar
Wednesday, January 22 2003 10:09 Hrs (IST)

Jammu: Terming the "healing touch policy" of People's Democratic Party (PDP)- Congress coalition as an eyewash, National Conference president Omar Abdullah on January 21 said the Mufti government has failed to deliver the promises made during the elections.

The state government has belied its promises regarding Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and disbanding of Special Operation Group and the release of political and other prisoners, Omar told reporters.

He said militancy is on the rise in the state and the government has proposed to reintegrate SOG into regular police force and even raising of Jammu Kashmir Voluntary Force as counter-insurgency commando force is being mooted by disbanding 24,000 SPOs.

He said the so-called people-oriented policies of the coalition government were just a hype and nothing tangible has been achieved by it so far.

"If the people-oriented programmes mean providing relief to the militancy victims at the doorstep then the coalition government is way behind and it better check the records of the performance of NC government in this regard," he said.

The PDP had raised a hue and cry about his father Farooq Abdullah using choppers but now two choppers have been pressed into service, one for the Chief Minister and the other for his daughter Mehbooba Mufti and that too when the state is passing through worst-ever financial crunch, he added.
