New Delhi: CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) on January 28 expressed serious
concern over the "belligerent and obdurate" attitude adopted by the United States
which, it said, appeared determined to go to war against Iraq irrespective of the
results of the UN Weapons Inspection team.
The party said in a statement that though no evidence of weapons of mass destruction
could be found, "the US was seeking to give the impression that Iraq was hiding
them".
"Even if this were true, then the answer is for permitting the inspectors to continue
their work to establish if this is a fact," it said adding that the US was, however,
not willing to accept it because if no evidence could be shown "then the US premise
to attack would be untenable".
It said the US was seeking to push the world into approving its war against Iraq
whose real purpose was to "control the oil resources and enhance America's interests
in the region".
The party's polit bureau called upon the international community and the Vajpayee
government to see through the "subterfuge" being adopted by the US to militarily
attack
Iraq to strengthen its hegemony in the world.
