Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala police had stepped up vigil on borders with the
neigbouring states to check sandalwood smuggler Veerappan and his gang sneaking into
the state, Chief Minister A K Antony told the state Assembly on January 28.
Police has been closely monitoring the borders in co-ordination with their
neighbouring counterparts, Antony said during Question Hour and added that a
meeting at the level of director generals of police (DGPs) had been planned in this
regard.
Though the police had been asked to deal with criminal gangs sternly, enactment of a
Legislation on the lines of the Goondas Act, prevailing in some states, was not on
the cards, he said.
A total of 36 suspects had been arrested in connection with sex scandal cases in
Mattanchery, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram., he said.
He however, said he did not subscribe to the view that the atrocities on women were
on the rise in Kerala.
