Bangkok: India on February 1 said a war against Iraq should be avoided and no
country should take unilateral stand in the matter, which should only be decided by
the United Nations.
"What should be done (with regard to Iraq) should be decided by the UN only, not by
any country unilaterally and a war should avoided," Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani
told a press conference before leaving for Phuket in Thailand.
He said Baghdad must also accept the UN resolution and give up weapons of mass
destruction.
Replying to questions, Advani said India was concerned about the fate of Indians
living in the Gulf in case of outbreak of war.
"We are very much concerned about the well being of the Indian population in the
region and are watching the situation very closely," he said.
