Jammu: The Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only road link between Kashmir
valley and the rest of the country, was thrown open for vehicular traffic after
Border Road Organisation (BRO) cleared it of snow and mud, a top BRO official said.
"We have cleared entire mud and snow blockages for movement of vehicular traffic
around 10:00 am (IST) yesterday (January 31)," BRO commandant colonel C Padmanabhan
said.
Padmanabhan, who looks after the 300-km long highway, said the road link is through
for two-way traffic, after the BRO cleared blockades caused by heavy snowfall and
landsides at Jawahar tunnel and other places.
"The men and machines of BRO are still working round the clock to keep the highway
open and we will not allow its closure," he said.
All the 138 vehicles carrying 600 stranded people have reached their destinations in
Srinagar and Jammu, official sources said.
