Chennai: Indian junior paddlers did the country proud with a clean sweep of the
medals in the Asian (South Asian) Junior Table Tennis championship that concluded in
Dhaka on January 30.
Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) officials and others gave the team members a
rousing reception when they arrived at the Kamaraj domestic airport.
In the girls section, S Sangeetha of Tamil Nadu was at her best in claiming the
singles and doubles titles for the gold medal and took the silver in the mixed
doubles final.
Sourav Chakraborty of Kolkata defeated Amalraj (TN) in the singles final and then
paired with Arunava to win the doubles crown beating the Indian duo of Amalraj and
Pathik Mehta. Chakraborty won the gold medal in the mixed doubles.
In the girls team Championship, India represented by Sangeetha, M Aparna and
Madhurika Patkar quelled the Sri Lankan (Kalpani, Srimali and Mouli) challenge with
a 3-0 verdict.
In the girls singles semi-finals, Sangeetha beat Kalpani of Sri Lanka and then went
on to win the title getting the better of her compatriot Madhurika Patkar 7-11, 11-
2, 11-9, 10-12, 11-7, while Sangeetha and Aparna disposed of Soma and Moumitha
(Bangladesh) 11-5 13-1 for the doubles title.
Later, Sangeetha pairing with Amalraj settled for the silver medal losing to Madrika
Patkar and Sourav Chakraborty 7-11, 5-11.
